Driving to Milford Sound is a breathtaking experience in itself. The scenic Milford Sound road takes visitors through the rugged terrain of Fiordland National Park, passing by crystal-clear lakes, cascading waterfalls, native forests and snow-capped peaks.
The most popular route starts from Queenstown and takes approximately 4-5 hours each way. ThisĀ includes some stops for photos and short walks but visitors should take note of the long driving time. The road is winding and narrow in places, so caution must be also taken while driving. We recommend that if you only have 1 day to explore Milford Sound from Queenstown that you take one of the coach tours on offer. That way you save the driving and can relax and enjoy the scenery along the way.
Visitors can also drive to Milford Sound from Te Anau (the closest town), this takes approximately 2-2.5 hours each way.
Our Opinion: The Milford road is a spectacular adventure in its own right and offers some of the most stunning views you will see in New Zealand.
