Milford Sound nestled in the heart of New Zealand’s Fiordland, provides a breathtaking canvas for star gazing. The pristine night skies offer a chance to witness several prominent star constellations unique to the Southern Hemisphere.

One of the most recognizable constellations visible from Milford Sound is Orion, often referred to as the Hunter. Orion dominates the southern sky during winter months, displaying its distinctive belt of three bright stars and its sword, which contains the stunning Orion Nebula.

The Southern Cross, or Crux, is another celestial gem easily spotted in the southern skies. This iconic constellation consists of four bright stars that form a distinctive cross shape, representing the Southern Hemisphere’s navigation point. The Pointers, two nearby stars Alpha Centauri and Beta Centauri, can be used to locate the Southern Cross.

Taurus, the Bull, is another constellation that graces the New Zealand night sky. It features the bright orange star Aldebaran, which represents the Bull’s eye. The Pleiades star cluster, also known as the Seven Sisters, can be found in Taurus as well, with its sparkling group of stars creating a beautiful sight.

Within Scorpius lies Antares, a red supergiant star that serves as the Scorpion’s heart and is one of the brightest stars in the night sky.

Other notable constellations visible from Milford Sound include Canis Major, home to the brilliant star Sirius, the brightest star in our night sky. The Southern Fish, Piscis Austrinus, can also be observed, along with its neighboring constellation, Grus the Crane.
