Milford Sound Visitor Terminal is your gateway to one of the world’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Situated in the heart of Fiordland National Park, the visitor terminal serves as a hub for exploring the captivating beauty of Milford Sound.
The terminal is located at the starting point for the Milford Sound cruises and is also close to the small Milford Sound Airport and the visitor car park.
All day and overnight Milford Sound cruises depart from the visitor terminal and most cruise companies have a desk here to assist guests to check-in before their cruise. You can also buy tickets here if you do not already have a cruise booked. (However in busy summer months we would recommend pre-booking).
As you step into the terminal, you’ll be greeted by a range of facilities and services designed to enhance your Milford Sound experience. Knowledgeable staff members from each company are available to provide information about the area, answer your questions, and assist with your bookings for various activities and tours.
The Terminal building also offers toilets and a couple of vending machines for drinks and snacks. However there is no café in the building (but remember you can purchase lunch and refreshments on board your cruise).
The visitor terminal also features informative displays and exhibits that offer insights into the unique ecosystem and geological formations of Milford Sound. Here you can learn about the diverse marine life, towering fiords, and the rich history of the region through simple exhibit boards.
One of the highlights of the terminal is the under cover viewing area, where you can marvel at the panoramic vistas of Milford Sound before you board your cruise. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes, take in the dramatic cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and the serenity of the fiord.
The terminal is open during daytime hours only according to the cruises operating that day. This means the terminal building closes as the last cruise returns – usually around 4pm. This includes visitor facilities such as the toilets and vending machines.
The Visitor Terminal is located a 10-15 minute walk from the visitor car park at Milford Sound. Note that you have to pay for parking. This can be done at the parking machines in the car park itself. There is no option to prepay for parking or book a space.
From the car park you then follow a well graded path round to the visitor terminal. This is a pleasant walk through native beech trees with views of the water on your left. If you have guests who cannot walk far or have disabilities you are able to drive up to the doors of the Visitor Terminal to drop-off people here. Please note though that you cannot leave your car or park at the entrance to the Terminal. You must return your vehicle to the visitor car park.
If you arrive by coach you will be dropped off by your driver at the entrance to the Terminal – there is no need to walk far!
The Milford Sound Visitor Terminal offers a comprehensive and enriching experience for visitors. Explore the exhibits, soak in the awe-inspiring views, and embark on unforgettable adventures from this central hub. Begin your journey at the terminal and let Milford Sound’s natural wonders captivate your senses.
